The ore is usually brown, a metallic iron color, or mixed with a large white quartz rock that has very little gold in it. Gold is heavy and highly malleable. Gold will not change color, crumble, or tarnish, and is unaffected by most solvents. Gold is commonly alloyed with silver and other metals.
The lump ore measures between 6.3mm and 31.5 mm in diameter, while fines ore is less than 6.3mm. The exception to this is Yandi fines ore, which is less than 10mm in diameter.

The ore consists of conglomerate pebbles mostly of quartz, in a sandy matrix, with abundant pyrite in the cement. The gold, which occurs in the cement but not in the pebbles, is closely connected with the pyrite and is not visible to the naked eye.

These ore bodies range from around 10 million to gt;4,000 million tonnes of contained ore, and have a grade of between 0.2% and 5% copper, with gold contents ranging from 0.1 to 1.41 grams per tonne. These ore bodies tend to express as cone like, blanket like breccia sheets within granitic margins, or as long ribbon like breccia or massive iron ...
Hey if you are looking for a great book on prospecting for gold, Check out: Fists Full of Gold by Chris Ralph: Quartz and Hard Rock Mining Miners have worked hard to dig gold from the solid hard rock quartz veins and other deposits of gold and silver. These web pages tell how they did it in the old days and how the technology was developed.
Iron staining is another excellent indicator that hard rock gold may be present. As mentioned already, reddish soils are a good indicator of this. If you are finding quartz pieces that have dark red or black attached to it, this is also a good sign that there is high iron content, and you may want to crush and sample some of the nearby rocks.
