The first pneumatic flotation plant in this country was erected by me in February 1914 for the National Copper Company at Mullan, Idaho, a description of which has already been published. The results were fully up to expectations from the very start. This plant consists of 8 rougher and 2 cleaner cells and treated 500 tons per 24 hours.
A Copper Flotation Flowsheet Because the copper in this type of ore usually assays only plus or minus 1% copper, the porphyry copper operations must be relatively large in order to be commercial. The flowsheet in this study illustrates a typical 3,000 ton per day operation.
Copper Sulfide Flotation Circuit. The pulp from the Conditioner is treated in a 10 cell Sub A Flotation Machine and a 4 cell Sub A Flotation machine. Sometimes conditioners are not provided; however, their use insures that reagents are thoroughly mixed into the pulp ahead of flotation.
A gold carbonaceous sulphide ore from California carrying free gold yielded a 93 per cent recovery into a concentrate at 14.4:1 to ratio of concentration after conditioning with 0.50 lb. per ton of reagent 645. In each case the ore was ground to about 70 per cent minus 200 mesh and conditioned at 22 per cent solids with the reagents as indicated.

The flotation section consists of two 10 cell Sub A Flotation Machines, one for the lead copper and the other for the zinc. The launder arrangement and pulp flow is the same for both machines and provides double cleaning of the rougher concentrates. This intricate arrangement of pulp flows is accomplished without the use of pumps and is possible with the distinctive cell to cell design of the Sub A Flotation Machine.
