The ball mill contains a hollow cylindrical shell that rotates about its axis. This cylinder is filled with balls that are made of stainless steel or rubber to the material contained in it. Ball mills are classified as attritor, horizontal, planetary, high energy, or shaker. View chapter Purchase book
Ball mills rotate around a horizontal axis, partially filled with the material to be ground plus the grinding medium. Different materials are used as media, including ceramic balls, flint pebbles, and stainless steel balls. An internal cascading effect reduces the material to a fine powder.
Manufacturing of Cement by Wet Process: The following is wet process of cement manufacturing step by step guide, 1. The raw limestone from quarries is first crushed into small size fragments. Then it is mixed with clay or shale in a ball or tube mill and ground to form a slurry of a fine consistency with the addition of water.
Charging a Wet Mill The general operation of a grinding mill is to have the product impacted between the balls as they tumble. Unlike dry milling, wet milling is more straight forward and more forgiving in terms of charging the product. As with dry milling there should be at least 25% liquid to fill the void space plus a bit more to insure the balls are striking product and not each other.
Key properties of grinding media include composition, hardness, size and density. Some common types include alumina, stainless steel, yttria stabilized zirconia and sand. Ball milling will result in a ball curve particle size distribution with one or more peaks. Screening may be required to remove over or undersized materials.
The power to drive a wet ball mill is said to be 30% lesser than that of a similar dry ball mill. Nature Of Materials In the production of some products both wet ball and dry ball milling processes are required. The grinding of the raw mix in a cement plant, can be carried out either wet or dry but because of the nature of the cement can, grinding it has to be carried out dry. Quality The quality expected will be the determinant of which ball milling process to be used.
Common ore includes copper ore, iron ore, molybdenum ore, phosphate rock, feldspar mine, fluorite ore, etc. The proportion of steel balls, materials, and water in wet grinding is 4:2:1. The detailed proportion can be determined by grinding experiments.
The CRRK series of wet grinding rod mills are tabulated below. The grinding charge in a ball mill consist of cast or forged steel balls. These balls are fed together with the feed and consequently ball mills can be in operation for months without stopping. The ball size is often in the diameter range of 20 75 mm.
